"I wasn’t sure when this was going to be ready, when this is going to come out. I wasn’t prepared. I just wanted to do it because I didn’t want to carry this story of mine by myself any longer. I wanted to share it with the world so whoever read it whoever it resonated with they had the courage to share theirs also. Because that’s what at the end of the day storytelling is. It’s really not—this memoir is really not about me, honestly. It really is about a lot of people out there who feel, whether it’s unseen, whether they feel invisible, or whether they’ve been told that they’re too much or too little, their dreams might be impossible. So, I feel like if you’re not the majority, and by majority if you are not a straight white man, you often feel like you, I think it’ll resonate with everyone."

"When the outside world didn’t see me like worthy of like you know that kind of accolades and applause you start to become your own cheerleader and at that time growing up it was really tough it was really tough to be like, ‘Wy am I not part of this? Why am I not belonging?’ But then unbelonging became my power because in that not getting validation all of a freed me. And it allowed me to dream the wildest, biggest dreams for myself. And you know, I genuinely believe in this thing, like in the true liberation lies in not needing validation from outside world. That is when I think you start to really begin the journey of getting to know yourself and loving yourself."

"I really hadn’t told too many people, not even my close friends, and—to relive that part and to write it down. And just to like, you know, like it was harrowing. I won’t lie. It was, it took me days to write it at the same time it went by so swiftly but it was also like, again, as I said like recording it, it really brought back so many memories and not you know there is a—it’s less of an anger up towards the person it’s more like the injustice of the situation of it all but um more than anything else I just wanted to go back to that kid and like give him a hug you know and just be like, ‘You’re gonna be okay.’"

STORYLINE:
Designer Prabal Gurung says he’s always been a storyteller. Finding success in the cutthroat fashion world early in his career, he told his story through colorful, glamourous designs that reflect his Nepalese culture. Now he’s sharing his life story in words with his bold new memoir, ”Walk Like A Girl.”
Candid, reflective and deeply personal, Gurung says processing childhood experiences with an abusive father and bullies and predators at school to write and audio record the book was the hardest thing he’s ever done. But he felt it was time to tell his story.
