STORYLINE:
China on Wednesday called on countries to “create conditions” for the resumption of direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine as talks are set to take place a day later in Turkey.
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed restarting direct peace talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Istanbul on Thursday, while Zelenskyy challenged the Kremlin leader to meet him in Turkey in person.
Asked about the upcoming meeting, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said “China has consistently called for peace talks and supported dialogue and negotiations to resolve the crisis.”
What will unfold remains unclear. The Kremlin has refused to confirm who will be going to Turkey and whether the delegation will include Putin. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said Zelenskyy will only sit down with the Russian leader.
The U.S. has agreed to drop its 145% tariff rate on Chinese goods to 30%. And China has agreed to lower its 125% rate on U.S. goods to 10%.
