STORYLINE:
The U.N. food agency’s country director for Gaza, Antoine Renard, told The Associated Press that a quarter of Gaza’s population is at risk of famine despite the fact that all the food needed to feed the entire population currently sits in warehouses in Israel, Egypt, and Jordan —and most of it is not even 40 kilometers from the conflict-wracked territory.
He said World Food Program warehouses in the strip remain empty, and the agency has gone from providing meals for one million people at the end of April to producing only 250,000 meals daily.
“Soon, we’re going to speak about the fact that people don’t even have access to a meal,” he warned. “Is that where we need to go to actually raise the alarm? It’s now that we need to act.”
