"We are thrilled to report that the judge granted our motion and ordered from the bench that Dr. Suri be released on bond. He will return to Virginia and soon be reunited with his wife and their children and the rest of the community here. This is a huge victory, not only for Dr. Suri, and for his three young children and his wife, Mapheze, who you’ll hear from in a minute. "

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mapheze Saleh, Dr. Khan Suri’s wife:
"Hearing the judge words brought tears to my eyes. I wish I could give her a heartful hug from me and from my three children who long to see their father. Bader told me if my suffering in the detention center is because I married to a Palestinian and because I spoke out against the genocide in Gaza, then I should wear it as a badge of honor. What I endure here is a drop in the ocean compared to the pain of the Palestinian who has been bombed, starved and massacred for 585 days. "

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Sophia Gregg, immigrants rights attorney for ACLU of Virginia:
"He should have never been arrested and jailed for his constitutionally protected speech just because the government disagrees with him. He should never have been punished for his relationship with his wife or his father-in-law."

STORYLINE:
A federal judge has ordered that a Georgetown scholar from India be released from immigration detention after he was detained in the Trump administration’s crackdown on foreign college students.

The judge issued the ruling Wednesday.

Badar Khan Suri was arrested by masked, plain-clothed officers on the evening of March 17 outside his apartment complex in Arlington, Virginia.

Officials said his visa was revoked because of his social media posts and his wife’s connection to Gaza as a Palestinian American. They accused him of supporting Hamas, which the U.S. has designated as a terrorist organization.
