"Spiritually, there are no (borders), because, as you know, the Holy Mountain has an ecumenical nature which it received – it received this mindset let’s say – this ecumenical spirit from the Byzantine Empire itself. Don’t we say that Byzantium was a commonwealth? It was a commonwealth in which peoples lived together in the same faith. But there were not only people from the same faith. There were also some who were not Christians, but they still managed to create a commonwealth. Mount Athos received this and continues it to this day."

"These people who had quests and came from various pursuits and paths from wherever they started, whether it was from Europe or Asia, they set out and had their own searches. But here they saw, or rather they felt, true life. So this covers their needs. This fills them. This gives them perspective. Above all, this gives them joy. Because this is, let me put it this way, a mission. It is the conclusion of life: joy."

"We truly have many fathers (monks) in the monastery, from at least 14 countries. That is very significant. The spirit of Elder Emilianos (the former abbot of the monastery) and of the current elder, Eliseos, played a very important role. Naturally they have great love for everyone, and they also warmly embrace foreigners. You don’t feel that you’re a stranger. From the start you feel that you’re an equal member of the brotherhood. This spirit, the open spirit of the elder, attracted many souls who were searching for a genuine, emphatic meaning of life."
