"These people who had quests and came from various pursuits and paths from wherever they started — whether it was from Europe or Asia — they set out and had their own searches. But here they saw, or rather they felt, true life. So this covers their needs. This fills them. This gives them perspective. Above all, this gives them joy. Because this is, let me put it this way, a mission. It is the conclusion of life: joy."

"We truly have many fathers (monks) in the monastery, from at least 14 countries. That is very significant. They have great love for everyone, and they also warmly embrace foreigners. You don’t feel that you’re a stranger. From the start you feel that you’re an equal member of the brotherhood. This spirit, the open spirit of the elder, attracted many souls who were searching for a genuine, emphatic meaning of life."

It attracted other people—either Orthodox from abroad or non-Orthodox who became Orthodox here. I myself became Orthodox here on Mount Athos."

Nothing like that – but they feel deep within that the attention each person gives to another truly fulfills them on a deep level."
