"I think that this meeting will have a fairly good outcome if they agree to continue meetings, to continue discussions, talks. At the very least, it will draw them into some kind of diplomatic process, which is already not bad."

STORYLINE:
Moscow residents said they were longing for peace Thursday ahead of planned talks between Russia and Ukraine, the first direct peace talks in three years.

A 66-year-old Moscow resident, Nikolai Frolov, said that even an agreement to continue dialogue would represent success, adding "at the very least, it will draw them into some kind of diplomatic process."

"I think common sense will prevail. It’s time to stop," another Moscow resident told The Associated Press.

Hopes for a breakthrough remained dim after Russian President Vladimir Putin spurned an offer by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet face-to-face in Turkey.
