STORYLINE:
China expressed its hope that Russia and Ukraine could continue to strive together for “a fair, lasting and binding peace agreement acceptable to all parties through dialogue and negotiation,” as the two countries have their first direct peace talks in three years on Friday.
Although expectations for a possible Putin-Zelenskyy meeting were low, the apparent lack of traction in peace efforts frustrated hopes of bold steps being taken in Turkey toward reaching a settlement.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian reiterated China’s principled position and consistent support for direct negotiations between the two sides to resolve the issue when commenting on the talks at a daily news briefing in Beijing.
Asked about a new U.S. rule against the use of Ascend computer chips made by Huawei Technologies anywhere in the world, Lin accused the U.S. of “abusing export controls” and “maliciously suppressing” China’s semiconductor industry.
“We urge the U.S. to immediately correct its protectionist and unilateral bullying practices and stop its unrestrained suppression of Chinese tech companies and the AI industry,” said Lin.
Earlier this week, the U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security issued guidance saying that Huawei’s Ascend semiconductors are subject to U.S. export controls, on the basis that they are thought to employ U.S. technology.
Separately, Lin said restated China’s commitment to working on “promoting a solution that accommodates the legitimate concerns of all parties” on the Iranian nuclear issue after President Donald Trump said that the U.S. and Iran have “sort of” agreed to terms on a nuclear deal.
