"China believes that the US approach is a typical act of unilateralism and protectionism. It not only harms the rights and interests of other countries, undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system, but is also not beneficial to domestic industrial development. China urges the US side to stop the 232 tariff measures (Section 232 which gives the US president power to impose tariffs on other countries national security grounds) as soon as possible and properly resolve the concerns of all parties through dialogue on an equal footing."

3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) He Yongqian, Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson:
"The US abuses export control measures to restrict Chinese chip products under unwarranted charges, seriously harming the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, seriously threatening the stability of the global semiconductor industry, and seriously undermining market rules and the international economic and trade order. This move by the US side is not conducive to long-term, mutually beneficial, and sustainable cooperation and development between the two countries. The Chinese side urges the US side to immediately correct its erroneous practices."

STORYLINE:
China took aim at US steel and aluminum tariffs on Thursday, after import fees on the raw materials remain omitted during the 90-day pause of tariffs in the ongoing US-China trade war.

The US Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 gives the president the power to impose tariffs on other countries national security grounds.

Drawing on Section 232, Trump resurrected his 2018 tariffs on steel and aluminum in February this year, hiking rates to 25%.

Speaking to reporters at a Commerce Ministry briefing in Beijing, spokesperson He Yongqian said the "US approach is a typical act of unilateralism and protectionism," urging the US to stop the 232 tariffs "as soon as possible."

He also addressed the recent US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) plan to issue warnings that the use of Huawei’s AI Ascend chips is a risk to industry and the public.

The BIS statement on Tuesday was announced with the stated goal of maintaining "global AI dominance."
