Chancellor Merz in Lithuania to mark deployment German military unit | DW News

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is visiting Lithuania today, to mark the deployment of Germany’s first permanent overseas military unit since World War II.

The 5000-strong armored brigade will be built up over the next two years and aims to deter potential Russian aggression in the Baltics. Merz, alongside the German Defence Minister, is also set to meet the Lithuanian President to discuss strengthening deterrence against Russia.
