South African President Cyril Ramaphosa met with President Trump in the Oval Office, where he contested Trump’s accusations of ‘white genocide’ perpetrated against white farmers in South Africa. With the Zelenskyy-Trump Oval Office meeting fresh in people’s minds, many South Africans activists and diplomats had expressed concerns prior to the meeting that Trump would embarrass and lambast Ramaphosa publicly. However the meeting, though tense, was seen as a diplomatic win by some South African pundits. In response to Trump’s claims, Ramaphosa pointed to constitutionally-protected freedom of speech in South Africa and explained that some politicians deploy hyperbolic rhetoric which is not supported by official South African policy on land rights and the prohibition of murder and manslaughter.
