2. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Pedro Nuno Santos, Socialist Party leader:
“What I wish for is a peaceful day, but with high electoral participation and respect for everyone, so that episodes like the ones we had this morning, of violence towards a socialist, can be avoided. (Socialist party politician was allegedly hit in the face by alleged supporter of far-right Chega party) I think we have to respond firmly against any type of violence and aggression, defend democracy and civic participation. And I believe that the overwhelming majority of Portuguese people do not identify with acts of violence, on the contrary, they respect the choices of others, even if they are different from ours.”
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Pedro Nuno Santos, Socialist Party leader:
“As you can imagine, my expectations are good, but at this moment, I can only wait for the participation of the Portuguese people in this vote, nothing more than that. I can say nothing more than that, as you can imagine, at this moment. But I hope the best for my country.”

STORYLINE:
Socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santos, his party’s candidate for prime minister, cast his vote on Sunday in Portugal’s general election.

Voters are returning to the polls for a third general election in three years, as the country’s increasingly fragmented political landscape defies efforts to unite behind policies on pressing national issues such as immigration, housing and the cost of living.

Hopes that the ballot might end the worst spell of political instability in decades for the European Union country of 10.6 million people could be dashed, however.

Polls suggest the election is poised to deliver yet another minority government, leaving the Portuguese back where they started.

For the past 50 years two parties have dominated politics in Portugal, with the centre-right Social Democrats and the centre-left Socialist Party alternating in power.

They are likely to come out on top in this ballot, too.

But public frustration with their record in government has fuelled the growth of new alternatives in recent years.

That has denied the bigger parties enough seats in Parliament to snare a majority needed to ensure they serve a full four-year term.
