STORYLINE:
China on Monday called on the U.S. to maintain the stability of global financial system with “responsible policies and measures” following Moody’s decision to strip the U.S. government of its top credit rating due to successive administrations’ failure to curb rising debt levels.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks during a daily briefing when asked about Moody’s downgrade of the U.S. credit rating from a gold-standard Aaa to Aa1 Friday.
Moody’s noted that the U.S. "retains exceptional credit strengths such as the size, resilience and dynamism of its economy and the role of the U.S. dollar as global reserve currency.”
Moody’s is the last of the three major rating agencies to lower the federal government’s credit. Standard & Poor’s downgraded federal debt in 2011 and Fitch Ratings followed in 2023.
At the same briefing, Mao announced Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar would visit China on Monday at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The three-day visit underscores “the Pakistani government’s high regard for developing China-Pakistan relations,” Mao stated, adding that the two countries would take the visit as an opportunity to deepen exchanges and cooperation and promote further development of ties.
Asked about the report that China supplied Pakistan with air defence and satellite equipment during its conflicts with India this month, Mao referred reporters to the competent authorities for further details.
“China attaches great importance to its relations with both India and Pakistan. We have always adhered to the principles of good-neighbourliness, peace, prosperity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and a shared future in developing relations with all neighbouring countries,” Mao added.
