"From the beginning of the war, Israel has stated clearly, we are monitoring the levels of basic items in Gaza and we will facilitate the supply of items in low levels in order to avoid shortages. Due to these statements, Israel is now allowing the supply of such items to the population. This will continue until the beginning of the operation of the new fund, a matter of days. The purpose of this is to temporarily bridge the current needs until the fund’s operation begins and supplies these items."

STORYLINE:
Israel said on Monday that it would resume aid deliveries "in low levels in order to avoid shortages" into the war-battered Gaza Strip after a complete halt on imports since early March.
During a press conference, the director general of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, Eden Bar Tal, said that "this will continue until the beginning of the operation of the new fund, a matter of days."
This will act as bridge toward the beginning of a new approach to aid delivery in Gaza, Bar Tal said, which will see a U.S.-backed organization distribute aid in organized hubs in Gaza that will be secured by the Israeli military.
Israel says the plan is meant to prevent Hamas from accessing aid, which Israel says it uses to bolster its rule in Gaza.
"Today, Israel is facilitating the entry of trucks with baby food into Gaza. In the coming days, Israel will facilitate the entry of dozens of aid trucks," he added.
Despite the announcement, no aid had gone in by mid-afternoon Monday.
Aid trucks that were briefly parked on the Israeli side of a border crossing turned back and drove off into Israel.
The developments come after a nearly three-month blockade and warnings by global experts of impeding famine.
