"During our administration, we used the threat of tariffs, very effectively."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Pence, Former Vice President:
"Underneath it all, I do believe that what’s new is that there is an effort in this administration to bring forward permanent tariffs in the American economy on all goods."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Pence, Former Vice President:
"I believe that President Trump understands his obligations to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. I believe that the people around him understand that as well. My concern has more to do with the implementation of policy at home and abroad. Its seems that there are more voices around the president this time around that question our obligations as leader of the free world."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Pence, Former Vice President:
"There are some that are advocating for higher taxes, and border taxes that will ultimately hurt American consumers. So, for our part, even though I’m on the outside, my hope is that we can continue to add to the voices around the president that remind him of the millions of Americans that made it possible for us to serve in our four years, and I believe voted to give him four more years."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Pence, Former Vice President:
"I think there should be no higher domestic priority than making the Trump/Pence tax permanent. And I’m encouraged that the House of Representatives has resisted some early calls to be raising the top marginal rate. And I’m grateful that conservatives in the House have been pressing for more common sense reforms in Medicaid, particularly with regard to able-bodied adults, that make more resources available to make those tax cuts permanent."

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Pence, Former Vice President:
"I think the American public should be concerned about $37 trillion in the national debt. Reality is that while there are some modest reforms in Medicaid that are included in this bill, the truth is that whether it’s the Congress or whether the administration and the government efficiency efforts, there has been a consistent effort to steer clear of the kind of common sense reforms of entitlements that will put our nation back on a path toward fiscal solvency and integrity."

STORYLINE:
Former Vice President Mike Pence spoke Monday in North Carolina against the Trump administration’s zealous efforts to impose tariffs on trading partners worldwide — another effort that shows his willingness to split at times with his former boss.
The education arm of Pence’s political advocacy group kicked off in Raleigh a series of events nationwide that was also billed as building support to extend tax reductions enacted by Trump and Republicans in 2017 but set to expire at year’s end.
