2. SOUNDBITE (German) Mascha Schilinski, director and co-writer – on the story:
"My co-author, Louise Peter, and myself, we were one summer in the region of Altmark in this farm where later the entire story took place. And we worked on two different projects, the two of us, and at some point the question came up, what actually happened in this place before, this place that had been empty for 50 years? And then we also came across a photograph from the 1920s and in that picture there were three women. And the way they were, they were literally looking at us. And this gave us the idea to actually think about, we are here in a specific place, we might be just fiddling around with our phones. But at some other point in time, people were here as well and they lived through some really crucial moments in life, just to put these two ideas opposite of each other so that you have the profane on the one side and then something vital on the other."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Mascha Schilinski, director and co-writer – on women’s generational trauma:
"Yeah, it was great because it allowed us to do some sort of self-reflection as well. We discussed subjects such as what forms us and what makes us into the people we are and what impact does it have on our bodies. And what actually continues to happen with us. What it might have been a result of what has happened before. It took us three and a half years to develop that film. And yeah, it was just a great time to develop the film further on."

6. SOUNDBITE (German) Mascha Schilinski, director and co-writer – on the biggest challenges:
"Well, they were actually many challenges. First of all, I came from film school, so it was difficult to find the financing for such a large scale film of such a length. Then also, I needed to find the time or one needs to find a time to make such a film. Yeah, it was a debut film, meaning that it’s difficult to find the financial means, they are limited. Then we worked with a lot of children. We had the shooting in summer 2023 and it happens to be a very rainy summer as well. And then we had these different time zones that we had to show. So that was obviously also very difficult. We only had 25 days of shooting. Yeah, so there were many challenges, but also a big challenge was basically that I had to constantly defend my idea, my vision of this film. There were many people who didn’t believe in this kind of narrative because it was not conventional."

STORYLINE:
For her Palme d’Or-nominated film, "Sound of Falling," German director Mascha Schilinski worked with a lot of child actors and developed a technique to help the children leave their characters on set – a fictitious "magical shower."
The film spans a century on a German farm, as the lives of four young girls from different time periods become intertwined.
