STORYLINE:
The Indian army this week gave a guided tour of some of the key sectors along the Line of Control in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
At one military post, soldiers scrambled to load artillery guns and demonstrated firing precision rounds across the border as troops carried out drills.
The ceasefire reached between India and Pakistan early this month seems largely intact but also gives an impression of constant strain.
The Indian army says it remains on razor-sharp alert to “respond with force” at the slightest provocation.
At another military post perched at 3,000 meters, the army swung into action, preparing to launch mortar attacks on hostile targets as part of another drill.
A surveillance drone hovered above while patrols equipped with sophisticated weaponry monitored barbed-wire fences for infiltration attempts by militants and suspected terrorists.
The militaries of India and Pakistan were engaged in one of their most serious confrontations in decades early this month when India struck targets inside Pakistan it said were affiliated with militants responsible for the massacre of 26 tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir last month.
The hostilities rose as both sides fired precision weapons and missiles to mainly target each other’s military installations and airbases.
