Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi wins Cannes’ top prize for revenge thriller | DW News

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has won the Palme d’Or award at the 78th Cannes Film Festival for his revenge thriller "It Was Just An Accident." Panahi spoke out against the Iranian government’s repressive tactics during his acceptance speech. The Iranian regime had imposed a 15-year film ban on Panahi, though the dissident filmmaker continued to produce films in this beriod. The ban was recently lifted. Panahi attended the Cannes Film Festival in person for the first time since 2003.
