The United Nations, as well as other aid organizations operating in Gaza, have reiterated their refusal to take part in Israel’s US-backed aid-distribution initiative, which would control the delivery of aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the Israeli plan would later create "sterile zones" in southern Gaza which would be free of Hamas fighters and where civilians would be taken to "safety." Aid groups accuse the Israeli plan of weaponizing aid and argue that participating in the plan would compromise their independence and neutrality by giving up control of aid distribution to a warring state party. The UN states that 500-600 trucks a day are needed to meet the Gaza Strip’s food and medical needs, and that Israel’s aid mechanism would not distribute the amount of aid required to feed a population reeling from Israel’s 11-week aid blockade.
