STORYLINE:
Spanish filmmaker Carla Simón premiered her latest film, "Romería," in competition at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

She was joined on the red carpet by the drama’s stars, Llúcia Garcia, Mitch and María Zamora.

The movie is inspired by Simón’s teenage years, blighted by her parents’ addictions and AIDS. It’s the last of her trilogy of loosely-connected movies about family.

"Romería" follows a young woman, Marina, who has lost both her parents to drug addiction and AIDS. While trying find out about her biological father, Marina encounters her extended family on her father’s side. They are reluctant to share stories about the past and Marina’s dead parents, as they had shamed the families with their substance abuse struggles.

This is Simón’s third feature. Her sophomore effort, "Alcarràs," won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2022.

"Romería" is one of 21 films in competition for the Palme d’Or award, which will be given on 24 May.
