STORYLINE:
China on Thursday called for a "comprehensive" investigation after Israeli troops fired warning shots as a group of international diplomats was visiting the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

Footage from the camp on Wednesday showed a number of officials giving media interviews as rapid shots ring out nearby, forcing them to run for cover. No one was reported injured.

Chinese representatives were among the delegation.

“China is closely following the incident," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a daily news conference.

"We firmly oppose any kind of actions that threaten the safety of diplomatic personnel and call for a comprehensive investigation and efforts to prevent such incidents from happening again," Mao said, urging Israel to refrain from taking actions which could exacerbate tensions.

The Israeli military said the delegation’s visit had been approved, but they “deviated from the approved route.” The military said it apologized and will contact the countries involved in the visit.

Mao also condemned the school bus bombing attack in Pakistan and reiterated China’s support to Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts.

The attack on Wednesday killed five people — including three girls — and wounded 53 others, mostly children, in the southwestern Pakistani province of Balochistan.

The province has been the scene of a long-running insurgency, with an array of separatist groups staging attacks, including the outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army, or BLA, designated a terror group by the United States in 2019.

Separately, Mao denied knowledge of a face-off between a China Coast Guard ship and a Philippine research vessel on Wednesday in the disputed South China Sea, where China claims nearly its entirety.

The Philippines said the Chinese ship fired water cannon and sideswiped the Philippine ship near contested Sandy Cay, which is claimed by China as Tiexian reef.

China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei have been locked in a tense territorial standoff in the South China Sea for decades.
