Melling: "I think both characters are quite vulnerable in very, very different ways. And so, I mean, I always, obviously that’s a lovely interpretation, but I always saw it as this love story, to be honest, albeit conventional, unconventional, sorry, but it always seemed to me to be these two polar opposite people and they start this relationship. So for me, I don’t know, certainly with Colin, it felt that he was deeply in love with Ray."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Harry Lighton, writer/director – on deciding how many sex scenes to put in the film:
"Yeah, for me it was always about those decisions – about how much to show or about not letting the like provocation of say seeing full frontal on screen like overwhelm the sincerity of the feelings between them. And at that same time I knew that I wanted the sex to have a degree of explicitness that meant that it didn’t feel like me as a filmmaker was passing judgment on the kind of transgressive sex which you’re seeing on screen. I felt like if I was too kind of elliptical or suggestive then it might feel like I was being hands off in my treatment of that sex."

STORYLINE:
The dynamics of an unconventional relationship revs up in “Pillion” starring Alexander Skarsgård and Henry Melling.
The title comes from the word for a passenger on a motorcycle, which is appropriate as Skarsgård is a mysterious biker called Ray, who sweeps Melling’s Colin off his feet.
Melling admits he always thought of it as an unconventional love story, as Colin is “deeply in love” with Ray and becomes his submissive, while Skarsgård admits he didn’t know what he thought about Ray until filming started.

From first time filmmaker Harry Lighton, the movie is based on the 2020 novel "Box Hill" by Adam Mars-Jones.
Lighton thought a lot about how much sex to show in “Pillion.”
He says didn’t want the “provocation of say, seeing full frontal on screen like overwhelm the sincerity of the feelings between them.”
Adding that, “at that same time I knew that I wanted the sex to have a degree of explicitness that meant that it didn’t feel like me as a filmmaker was passing judgment on the kind of transgressive sex which you’re seeing on screen. “Pillion” is showing in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard sidebar.
The event concludes on Saturday.
