“It’s an opportunity for Americans to learn, but I think it’s also a tremendous opportunity for all the parliamentarians who are coming as part of the summit from Europe and Canada to learn more about the United States and to sort of step away from the left-right divide or the latest thing out of the federal government, but to sort have a cultural exchange. That’s so important when it when we think about peace.”

STORYLINE:
Representatives of NATO-aligned nations will gather beginning Thursday in the Ohio city of Dayton, where an end to the three-year Bosnian War was brokered 30 years ago.
The NATO Parliamentary Assembly will unpack the lessons of the Dayton Peace Accords for navigating ongoing global conflicts.
Organizers are framing the event as a celebration of peace and diplomacy.
“It’s an opportunity for Americans to learn, but I think it’s also a tremendous opportunity for all the parliamentarians who are coming as part of the summit from Europe and Canada, and their families, to learn more about the United States and to sort of step away from the left-right divide or the latest thing out of the federal government, but to sort have a cultural exchange," said Natalie Hudson, a Political Science Professor and Executive Director of the Human Rights Center at the University of Dayton.
It’s the first time the event has been held in the U.S. since 2003.
Roughly 300 parliamentarians from 32 NATO nations are expected.
The five-day meeting comes as the Trump administration has seemed to place conditions on the U.S. defending its NATO allies in Europe.
