“So we start training for this at the very, very earliest portions of instrument flight training. So pilots, when they first start flying under instrument control, instrument flight rules, where they are reliant on communication with an aircraft control facility, we talk about what happens if you lose communication. It’s a fundamental thing that we’ve been talking about since the very basics. It really depends on where you are in the airspace if we were to have a time of lost communication as to what the next steps are. But there’s a really regimented set of rules and procedures that we would follow in that instance.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Capt. Miles Morgan, United Airlines Flight Training:
“Our industry is set up on multiple layers of redundant systems. And so we’re never going to be beholden to one set of circumstances, which would be something that would be a concern for us. So if we were to lose control or contact with the air traffic control facility, we’ve got multiple layers of people that control airspace around it. So we would immediately go to another frequency, we would talk air-to-air, we would rely on our onboard systems. This is an extremely rare occurrence, but it does happen. It has happened throughout, you know, time. It’s something that pilots have had to deal with since the very beginning of flight, and so it’s not a particularly concerning thing for us. It’s just something we manage like the rest of our flight. We are really focused on safety at all times, and this is just another one of those things that we look for opportunities to get you to where you’re going.”

“Twenty hours a day we train pilots 362 days a year. Our focus, 100%, is on equipping our pilots to fly you safely from point A to point B and to make the decisions that they need to make to ensure that we have a good experience for you, we take good care of you, but most of all, it is safe. We are in the absolute safest mode of transportation on the planet, and the United States’ air system has gotten a lot of attention recently, but it is undoubtedly the safest skies in the world.”

STORYLINE:
The news that air traffic controllers in charge of directing planes into New Jersey’s busiest airport twice lost their radar and radios at once after both their primary and and main backup systems failed was alarming.

But pilots, the Federal Aviation Administration and other experts say even when that happened there were still other redundant systems and training that helped keep the planes safe during the repeated outages affecting the Newark Airport over the past month.

Controllers in the tower at an airport can also resort to using high-powered light guns to send a green or red signal to pilots to let them know if they are clear to land even if they can’t talk to them over the radio.
