"It didn’t go as well as President Ramaphosa expected. Trump was pretty much prepared for him and he ran with that narrative of South Africa being a very violent society. Perpetrating targeted killings against white farmers, his choice of words, horrible things happening there. And therefore, the president (Ramaphosa) at this time did not have a comeback as far as that perception is concerned. They didn’t succeed in allaying that perception, I think they were caught off guard."
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr Zimkhitha Manana, international relations expert:
"I think another thing that President Ramaphosa or the team did not realise is that this is not the traditional diplomatic stage that they are used to, it’s a new type of diplomacy. It’s a Trump show, right? And I think they should have prepared for that and also have a comeback for many of the jabs that they received from the Trump administration. But we remain hopeful there will be some positive outcome out of this."

"I honestly don’t understand why Ramaphosa is actually in the United States when Trump has made it very clear how he feels about South Africa, and his feelings on South Africa especially with what happened recently regarding the Afrikaners just leaving. I also think that it’s been used as a lure by Elon Musk to kind of negotiate Starlink being used in South Africa and I think that’s very problematic."

STORYLINE:
South Africans in Johannesburg on Wednesday reacted to the White House meeting in Washington D.C. between U.S. President Donald Trump and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Trump used a White House meeting to forcefully confront Ramaphosa, accusing the country of failing to address Trump’s baseless claim of the systematic killing of white farmers.

International relations expert, Dr Zimkhitha Manana told the Associated Press that Ramaphosa and his team did not realise that "this is not the traditional diplomatic stage that they are used to, it’s a new type of diplomacy."

"It’s a Trump show and I think they should have prepared for that and also have a comeback for many of the jabs that they received from the Trump administration," he added.

Dr Westen Shilaho Kwatemba, also an international relations expert, felt the meeting "didn’t go as well as President Ramaphosa expected" and that he and his team were "caught off guard."

He said Trump "ran with that narrative of South Africa being a very violent society" and that Ramaphosa "did not have a comback."

Experts in South Africa say there is no evidence of whites being targeted for their race, although farmers of all races are victims of violent home invasions in a country with a high crime rate.

The South African leader had sought to use the meeting to set the record straight and salvage his country’s relationship with the United States.

The bilateral relationship is at its lowest point since South Africa enforced its apartheid system of racial segregation, which ended in 1994.
