“I have been designing Christmas lights for almost 38 years. It’s an industry that I entered by chance. In the early days, the East Tsim Sha Tsui area was newly developed, with properties built with glass walls. The area was dark, and not many people visited. Property developers approached us for ideas to make the space brighter.”

“During Hong Kong’s handover, I created a light design on a building in Wan Chai. Essentially, I have placed a stage onto a building. I used a stage control system to manage 80,000 light bulbs. The design was divided into foreground, midground, and background. The foreground featured eight dolphins, the midground depicted Hong Kong Island, and the background showcased The Peak releasing fireworks. All of these elements were crafted with light bulbs and enhanced by stage lighting effects.”

“As times change, light bulbs are gradually being phased out and are no longer widely used. Over time, they have been replaced by LEDs. Therefore, we must adapt to the trend, replacing light bulbs with LEDs step by step.”

STORYLINE:
Bright lights, big festivities, it’s a tradition which Hong Kong is famous for and this is the man who has has spent decades creating them.
Electrician Terence Wong is the designer of the festive lights that illuminate Hong Kong’s iconic skyscrapers.
His journey began early when he was trained as an electrician while working at his brother’s electrical shop.
“I have been designing Christmas lights for almost 38 years. It’s an industry that I entered by chance. In the early days, the East Tsim Sha Tsui area was newly developed, with properties built with glass walls. The area was dark, and not many people visited. Property developers approached us for ideas to make the space brighter,” explains Wong.
As one of Hong Kong’s pioneers in festive light design, Terence is especially busy during Christmas and Chinese New Year.
Each year, he faces the challenge of designing storytelling displays that flow between the two festivals.
He says he researches as much as he can to gather stories and images which inspire his ideas.
Wong’s creations have been physical backdrops to some of Hong Kong’s most historical moments.
