3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“China consistently opposes the politicization of educational cooperation and the groundless attacks and smears against China. The U.S. sanctions (on Xinjiang Production and Construction Corp) you mentioned are illegal, and the U.S. should lift them as soon as possible.”
STORYLINE:
China on Friday said the move by President Donald Trump administration to ban international students from Harvard would harm America’s international standing.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Thursday revoked Harvard’s ability to enrol international students, saying the school has created an unsafe campus environment by allowing “anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators” to assault Jewish students on campus.

The move could force as many as 6,800 foreign students at the school outside of Boston — more than a quarter of its total enrollment — to transfer or leave the country.

Chinese students make up a large part of Harvard University’s international student population.

China considers educational cooperation with the U.S. mutually beneficial and opposes its politicization, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a daily briefing in Beijing when asked about the situation.

She added that China will firmly protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students and scholars overseas but didn’t offer any details on how it would in this situation.

Mao also slammed U.S. sanctions on the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corp (XPCC) when asked about alleged ties between the university and the Chinese government and military — links that are believed to have prompted Trump’s decision.

The Trump administration alleged that the university hosted and trained members from XPCC, which was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2020 for its connection to serious human rights abuses in the far western Xinjiang region.

Mao also criticized the Philippines recent actions in the South China Sea, saying they "seriously infringing on China’s sovereignty".

On Thursday, Philippine officials condemned the Chinese coast guard for using what they say was a powerful water cannon to target one of two Philippine fishing boats conducting marine research near Sandy Cay, claimed by China as Tiexian Reef.

Separately, Mao said China and the Netherlands will “maintain close communication through existing channels” over semiconductor cooperation following Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp’s visit to China.

The two countries’ cooperation in the semiconductor sector has been strained by Dutch export restrictions, driven by U.S. pressure, which limited ASML’s sales of advanced chipmaking equipment to China.
