STORYLINE:
Chinese filmmaker Bi Gan premiered his latest film "Resurrection" at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night.
The director was joined on the red carpet by the film’s stars Shu Qi, Jackson Yee, Yongzhong Chen, Gengxi Li, Jue Huang and Mark Chao.
The movie, billed as a sci-fi mystery, tells the story of a so-called Fantasmer (played by Yee in multiple incarnations) who dreams his way through the 20th century. The various episodes of his dream travels take style inspiration from various genres, moving from German expressionism, film noir, mobster dramas, to vampire romances with a dash of silent film performance from Qi.
"Resurrection" is Bi Gan’s third film and is competing in the main selection with 21 other films. His previous work, "Long Day’s Journey into Night" (2018) was presented in the festival’s sidebar competition Un Certain Regard.
The 78th Cannes Film Festival runs until 24 May.
