A court has handed down a guilty verdict in one of France’s largest-ever prosecutions of sexual abuse. Former surgeon Joel Le Scouarnec has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for almost 300 counts of sexually assaulting or raping people, most of them children. The 74-year-old is already in prison for a prior sexual abuse conviction. The case has shocked France and raised questions about why he wasn’t caught earlier.
DW correspondent Rosie Birchard was at the courthouse in Vannes in western France and told us more about the verdict.
