4. SOUNDBITE (German) Johann Wadephul, German Foreign Minister:
“The reaction falls to the European Commission. It has our full support in working to preserve our access to the American market. I think such tariffs help no one, but would just lead to economic development in both markets suffering. So we are still counting on negotiations, and support the European Commission in defending Europe and the European market while at the same time working on persuasion in America.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Indian Foreign Minister:
“India has zero tolerance for terrorism. India will never give in to nuclear blackmail. And India will deal with Pakistan purely bilaterally. There should be no confusion in any quarter in that regard. We also value Germany’s understanding that every nation has a right to defend itself against terrorism.”

9. SOUNDBITE (German) Johann Wadephul, German Foreign Minister:
“All of us were deeply afflicted that India became the target of a brutal terror attack on April 22nd. We condemn this attack against civilians in the harshest terms possible. We express our condolences to all victims and their relatives. We welcome that after the initial military exchange and under consideration of India’s right to defend itself against terrorism a ceasefire was established. It is important that the ceasefire remains stable and a dialogue takes place.”

STORYLINE:
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the European Union’s executive commission has his country’s full support in working to preserve the bloc’s access to the US market.
Wadephul made the comments during a joint press conference with India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened a 50% tax on all imports from the European Union as well a 25% tariff on Apple products unless iPhones are made in America.
The German DAX stock index suffered heavy losses following Trump’s remarks.
“I think such tariffs help no one, but would just lead to economic development in both markets suffering,” Wadephul said in Berlin.
