"Think about where we are right now. We think we’re in a time unlike any other. There’s people that are so anxious about it. And I think never has it been more important to understand history to know that we’ve been through the Civil War. We’ve been through the Great Depression. We been through World War II. And the people living then didn’t know how it was going to end. They were as fearful as we are now. But we know that the Civil War ends with the emancipation. We know the Great Depression comes to an end. We know the Allies won World War Two. We know that the West finally got settled. We know that these people somehow made it over the Rocky Mountains and California was there and there was a gold rush. They were living in times of anxiety as we are now, but it gives us hope, I think, and solace to look back at the history, see how difficult it was, and somehow we emerged and the country got bigger and stronger."
SOUNDBITE (English) Kevin Costner, actor/director:
"I wish we would have a giant shift in education where history dominated more than math, because the people that are really good at math, they’re going to search out math anyway because that’s who they are. They’re just built that way, but everybody can understand where they come from."
