To each their own, but for me, no. It’s as if she’s my daughter, it’s as if she’s my little human daughter. I treat her the same way."

13. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Marcos Díaz Videla, a psychologist specialized in human-canine relationships:
"I believe that today we support bonding with animals. Traditionally, one might have questioned letting your animals on the bed, celebrating their birthdays, or what was called ‘humanizing’ them. Today, on the contrary, what’s questioned is having animals without forming family-like bonds with them."

LEAD IN:
In Buenos Aires, pets are more than just companions — they’re practically family.
The Argentine capital now ranks among the global leaders in pet ownership per capita.
But as the love for dogs rises, the birth rate falls. New figures show a 6.5% drop in births across the country from 2022 to 2023, raising questions about changing priorities in a nation of growing four-legged families.
STORYLINE:
Party-goers clapped and sang as Venus, all dressed up for her birthday in a pink party hat, gazed at the candles flickering on her cake.
When the time came for her to make her three birthday wishes, as is traditional in Argentina, Venus’ owner, Victoria Font, intervened, blowing out the candles to a round of applause. Then her mixed-breed pooch enjoyed a slice of meat-flavored birthday cake.
