"Today is a horrible day for the Kansas City Jewish community but it’s even more just devastating for the Milgrim family. This morning, Bob and Nancy Milgrim got the unimaginable call that their beautiful daughter Sarah was murdered in Washington, DC. She was murdered because she was an employee of the Israeli embassy. She was murdered because she was Jewish, and she was murdered alongside her boyfriend, Yaron. Today Bob and Nancy found out only hours before the rest of us in the media that Yaron had purchased an engagement ring and planned to propose to Sarah in the coming weeks when they went together to Israel. The tragedy just keeps compounding."

STORYLINE:
People gathered in Wichita, Kansas on Thursday to pay homage to Sarah Milgrim, a Jewish woman killed in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.
"Today is a horrible day for the Kansas City Jewish community but it’s even more just devastating for the Milgrim family," said Jay Lewis, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City during the vigil.
Lewis added "she was murdered because she was an employee of the Israeli embassy, she was murdered because she was Jewish."
Milgrim was from Overland Park in Kansas.
Her former roommate and friend, Amanda Birger shared a message during the vigil saying "something I think that Sarah would want me to say is please strive to learn as much as you can, educate yourself as much as possible so that you can advocate for others in need."
Sarah Milgrim was fatally shot along with her boyfriend Yaron Lischinsky, an Israeli citizen, were leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum around 9:15 p.m.
Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter said Yaron Lischinsky had purchased a ring this week with the intent to propose next week in Jerusalem.
The suspect told police after his arrest, “I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza," federal authorities said Thursday in announcing charges in the killings they called a targeted act of terrorism.
Elias Rodriguez, 31, shouted “Free Palestine” as he was led away after his arrest, according to charging documents.
Rodriguez faces charges of murder of foreign officials and other crimes and did not enter a plea during a perfunctory court appearance.
Additional charges are likely, prosecutors said, as authorities continue to investigate the killings as both a hate crime against the Jewish community and terrorism.
The stunning attack prompted Israeli missions to beef up their security and lower their flags to half-staff.
It came as Israel pursues another major offensive in the Gaza Strip in the war with Hamas that has heightened tensions across the Middle East and internationally, and that law enforcement officials have repeatedly warned could inspire violence in the U.S.
