STORYLINE:
Southeast Asian nations must stay united to face the fallout from global trade disruptions due to U.S. tariff hikes, Malaysia’s foreign minister said Sunday.
Speaking at the opening of a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur, Mohamad Hasan said the bloc’s members were are among those nations most heavily affected by the U.S.-imposed tariffs,.
The countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, many which rely on exports to the U.S., are reeling from U.S. tariffs ranging from 10% to 49%.
Six of its 10 members were among the worst-hit with tarrifs ranging from 32% to 49%.
ASEAN initially sought a meeting with the U.S. as a bloc but that effort appeared to peter off.
When U.S. President Donald Trump last month announced a 90-day pause on the tariffs, countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam swiftly began trade negotiations with Washington.
Hasan also said ASEAN’s unity was also crucial as the region grapples with impacts of climate change and disruption from the malevolent use of artificial intelligence and other unregulated technologies.
The foreign ministers’ meeting preceded Monday’s ASEAN leaders’ summit in Malaysia, the bloc’s current chair.
