In recent weeks, a number of European countries have changed their rhetoric on Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip, with the UK and France calling Israel’s conduct in Gaza "egregious." One of the biggest shifts has been in Germany with Chancellor Friedrich Merz saying he no longer understood Israel’s objectives in Gaza. Merz’s statements have added fuel to a debate over whether Germany should continue to deliver arms to Israel. Social Democratic (SPD) members of the current German government coalition have urged a halt to arms transfers to Israel, though Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said an arms embargo would be a step too far. Human rights organizations have noted that Germany’s export of arms to Israel is in violation of the binding international Arms Trade Treaty.
