STORYLINE:
With their unmistakable red noses, extravagant shoes, colorful outfits and unique makeup, clowns gathered in the streets of Peru’s capital Sunday to mark Clown Day.
The colorful parade in Lima, which includes awards for the best costumes, makeup, routine and improvisation, takes place every year on May 25.
For Renato Pichigua, a Manchita clown, lighting up people’s day, is a serious business.
“It’s something wonderful; it’s something we were born to do, and we enjoy—the applause of the audience, the joy of the children, the joy of the parents—for me, it’s the greatest satisfaction there is as an artist, as the clown that I am,” he said.
For more than three decades, clowns in Peru have been celebrating their day in a colorful style, only interrupted in 2020 and 2021 by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The date of the celebration was chosen to remember and pay homage to clown Tony Perejil (José Álvarez Vélez) who died in hospital on 25 May 1987.
