"There have now been several invitations and opportunities for the Russian president (Vladimir Putin) to come to the negotiating table, and he has rejected them. And we have always made it clear that this behaviour will not remain without consequences. This means we will have to decide on sanctions within the European framework. I will also discuss this issue in the United States of America, and we will, of course, continue to support Ukraine militarily so that it can defend itself and prevent the Russian aggressor from successfully continuing his war."

"But the basic principle is what the Federal Chancellor (Friedrich Merz) has already said on several occasions: We will not make statements about individual weapon systems, there is an ambiguity here. We will not give Mr. Putin the opportunity to know what we are specifically doing, it will be responsible, but it will be such that Ukraine can defend itself effectively. This was the case in the past, and it will be the same in the future."

STORYLINE:
Portuguese Foreign Affairs Minister Paulo Rangel on Monday hosted his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, for talks in Lisbon.
During a joint news conference afterwards, Wadephul said the European Union would be discussing the imposition of further sanctions on Russia, after it launched its biggest drone attack against Ukraine overnight.
"We have always made it clear that this behaviour will not remain without consequences," he said.
US President Donald, Trump has threatened massive sanctions, too, but so far hasn’t taken action.
But he made it clear Sunday night that he is losing patience with Putin.
Wadephul will be travelling to the US on Tuesday for an inaugural visit.
A meeting with his counterpart Marco Rubio is planned in Washington on Wednesday, as announced by the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.
