"The interconnectivity of our three markets will form one of the largest regional markets in the world. This will also unleash a multiplier effect, enabling our three parties to share more substantial benefits through the joint development of a large market. "China is willing to work with ASEAN and GCC countries to strengthen the alignment of development strategies, deepen regional integration cooperation, and enhance the level of trade and investment liberalisation and facilitation. At the same time, we must all firmly uphold the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core and promote the creation of a stable and orderly international market environment."

STORYLINE:
Chinese Premier Li Qiang underscored the importance of "deepening mutual trust and enhancing solidarity," during a high-level forum that brought together Southeast Asian nations, six Persian Gulf countries, and China on Tuesday.

Speaking at an official dinner of the ASEAN-GCC-China Economic Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Li warned that "the current wave of economic globalisation is undergoing unprecedented and significant shocks."

"The values we have long upheld — peaceful development, cooperation, and mutual benefit — are facing severe challenges," he added.

The gathering marks a concerted effort by the three parties to expand economic engagement and bolster resilience as they grapple with a volatile global trading system due to U.S. tariff hikes.

Li highlighted the vast potential created by linking the markets of ASEAN, GCC, and China, whose combined trade volume currently accounts for only 5.4% of global trade.

"As we face increasing decoupling and the building of barriers, it is even more important that we insist on sharing resources and empowering each other," Li said.

He reiterated China’s readiness to work closely with both ASEAN and GCC nations to align development strategies, deepen regional integration, and raise the level of trade and investment liberalisation.

China is ASEAN’s top trading partner, and has sought to present itself as a reliable ally to the region amid its rivalry with the U.S.

The GCC supplies over a third of China’s crude oil imports.
