8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Alberto Van Klaveren, Chile Minister of Foreign Affairs:
“We believe that the cost of these operations is extremely serious. We also believe that Israel has not granted the urgent humanitarian assistance facilities that the international community and especially the United Nations Agency for Refugees wants to provide to the civilian population in Gaza. We believe that in the face of these actions very drastic measures are really called for. Even in Israel war crimes are being committed. Not only do we affirm it, the international community affirms it.”

STORYLINE:
Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren reiterated Chile’s stance on the withdrawal of its military and defense attachés from Israel, calling for "energetic measures" in response to what he described as ongoing war crimes in Gaza.
Van Klaveren noted that Israel had already withdrawn its own defense attaché from Chile following the exclusion of Israeli defense companies from FIDAE 2024, a move Chile made in protest at airstrikes on Palestinian civilians.
He emphasized that while Chile recognizes Israel’s right to self-defense against Hamas, “nothing justifies the scale of civilian deaths” or the destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure, with over 54,000 reported deaths and severe humanitarian crisis.
The minister pointed out that other traditional allies of Israel, particularly in Europe, are also reassessing their agreements. Chile’s embassy in Tel Aviv remains operational, although currently led by a chargé d’affaires, as the ambassador was previously recalled and no replacement is planned under current conditions.
