STORYLINE:
The Chinese government on Thursday reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights and interests of workers amid reports that Brazilian prosecutors plan to sue Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD and two of its contractors over allegations of using workers in slave-like labour conditions and engaging in international human trafficking.

The labour prosecutors’ office in Bahia state said in a statement issued Tuesday that they are seeking 257 million Brazilian reais ($50 million) in damages from BYD and two of its contractors- China JinJiang Construction Brazil and Tecmonta Equipamentos Inteligentes.

The lawsuit stems from an investigation that led to the rescue last year of 220 Chinese workers from the construction site of BYD’s new factory in the city of Camaçari.

Prosecutors said the workers were brought to Brazil under false pretences and with visas that did not match their jobs.

“The Chinese government attaches great importance to protecting and safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of workers and consistently requires Chinese enterprises to operate in accordance with laws and regulations,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said when asked about the case at a daily news briefing.

Separately, Mao justified China’s deployment of a meteorological observation buoy in disputed waters south of Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture, saying the area was “under Chinese jurisdiction.”

Her comment follows Japanese media reports saying that China has recently removed a large buoy placed without Japan’s approval inside Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) off the coast of Yonaguni Island.

The Japanese government has been demanding that China remove the buoy since it was placed last December.

“According to what we learned, relevant Chinese departments are conducting routine maintenance on the buoy as needed,” Mao said when asked for a reason for the removal.
