“High tariffs are not going to bring economic prosperity. Instead, through mutual investment, with Japan investing in the United States, we can bring jobs to the people President Trump has spoken about—those who have been forgotten or left behind. Japan and the U.S. can work together to create excellent products and offer them to people around the world. And by using those products, people around the world can enjoy even greater prosperity.”

“CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) is an initiative aimed at that very goal. It establishes high-standard, common rules that cover a wide range of areas, and it goes beyond mere economic benefits—it also contributes to global peace and prosperity. As an Asian nation, we have taken the lead in promoting it. Going forward, we will continue working on expanding and upgrading this framework.

STORYLINE:
Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Thursday raised concerns about escalating tension over a U.S. tariff war and stressed his determination to defend multilateral trade systems.

Speaking at a forum, he stressed his goal of promoting cooperation and dialogue with countries in Southeast Asia and Europe.

“As protectionism and inward-looking tendencies grow around the world, now is the time for the nations of Asia — the center of global growth — to join hands and demonstrate to the world the importance of a free and fair economic order based on rules," added Ishiba at Nikkei’s annual Future of Asia Forum in Tokyo.

He also said that the use of high tariffs will not lead to "economic prosperity" and instead, will usher in further "sacrifices" which, in turn, hurt the global economy.

His comments come just as Japan’s chief tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa was on his way to Washington for his fourth round of talks to try to get the U.S. to drop all recent tariff measures.

So far, Japan has not been successful and is reportedly considering purchasing more U.S. farm products and defense equipment as bargaining chips.
