Conservative Karol Nawrocki has narrowly won Poland’s presidential election – in a blow to the government led by Donald Tusk in Warsaw. Nawrocki is a fierce political opponent of the prime minister. As president, he’ll have the power to veto legislation – potentially posing a major obstacle to the prime minister’s policy agenda. Nawrocki’s victory could also put renewed pressure on the relationship between Poland and the European Union and complicate European support for Ukraine. His success is being seen as a win for European political populists aligned with US president Donald Trump. In reaction to Nawrocki’s election Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that he will ask the parliament for a vote of confidence in the coming days.
