"From Trump’s perspective, this decision makes sense. But for international students, Harvard is one of the top schools in the world. Having visas cancelled is not good news. Trump believes this is the right decision because he promotes the ‘Make America Great Again’ policy. Speaking as a student myself, though, I’m not able to study at Harvard, having fewer international exchanges is definitely not good for America’s development.”

"China will see a reduction in brain drain. Some people may not want to return after studying and living overseas. But with this policy, more people might reconsider going abroad to study and live. This could be a positive change for China’s development. More talented individuals may choose to stay at Tsinghua or Peking University, or with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other top institutions in China, which would benefit the development of domestic science and technology."

STORYLINE:
Chinese university students in Beijing expressed concern over the future of student exchange programs Thursday, after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said some Chinese students would have their U.S. visas revoked.
“It’s not a good thing that they are refusing foreign students the opportunity to study in the U.S., because international students represent the cultural exchange between countries,” said 20-year old art student Deng Zhifei.
“I’m concerned that this policy will actually be implemented because it feels like just the beginning. There may be more negative policies to follow,” she added.
A post-doctoral student studying industrial safety, Zhang Qi, was not surprised at the announcement.
“From Trump’s perspective, this decision makes sense,” he said, adding that the move would hurt US institutions more than Chinese ones.
“Having fewer international exchanges is definitely not good for America’s development… But with this policy, more people might reconsider going abroad to study and live. This could be a positive change for China."
Rubio announced on Wednesday that the U.S. will begin revoking the visas of some Chinese students, “including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.”
On Tuesday, Rubio halted the scheduling of new visa interviews for international students.
