STORYLINE:
China is promoting itself as a proponent of dialogue-based dispute resolution by hosting a ceremony to mark the establishment of an international mediation organization on Friday, as it grapples with trade and political tensions with the U.S.
Representatives of over 30 countries, ranging from Pakistan and Indonesia to Belarus and Cuba, signed the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation one by one in Hong Kong to become a founding member of the international body, following Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The support of developing countries signaled Beijing’s influence in the global south amid rising geopolitical tensions.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in his speech said 32 countries have become founding members of of the International Organization for Mediation and he welcomes more members to join.
He said the setup of the new body will provide legal mechanism to help promote the peaceful resolution to disputes and helps move beyond the “zero-sum mindset of ‘you lose and I win’”.
Hong Kong leader John Lee announced that the International Organisation for Mediation’s headquarters will be open and offering its services as early as the end of 2025.
