STORYLINE:
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met on Friday with the U.N. special envoy for Syria to discuss the situation in the war-torn country.
The U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, also attended the meeting.
Salam and Geir Pedersen spoke about the U.N.’s contribution to stability in Syria, as well as coordination between Beirut and Damascus to control the border between the two neighboring countries, according to a statement.
The Lebanon-Syria border witnessed clashes in recent months, mainly between smugglers who were affected by measures taken by security forces on both countries.
In March, Lebanon and Syria signed an agreement on border demarcation and to boost coordination between the two countries regarding security along their tense frontier.
The deal signed by the Lebanese and Syrian defense ministers in Saudi Arabia came after clashes in border areas earlier that month left several people dead and dozens wounded.
Following their meeting with Salam, Pedersen and Hennis-Plasschaert also met with Lebanese Culture Minister Ghassan Salameh in Beirut.
