3. SOUNDBITE (English) Tanya Washington, Georgia State University law professor:
"The Black hair care business is like a $2.5 billion dollar industry and we know that a lot of the products are imported from China and other places that will be subject to tariffs and so there is an anticipated increase in the cost of those products that would include products that are applied to the hair as well as hair extensions, wigs."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Tanya Washington, Georgia State University law professor:
"All of the beauty supply stores are likely to be affected. The budding industry of Black-owned beauty supplies are going to be affected more immediately and more adversely because they did not have the resources, many of them, to stock up on the supply of products in anticipation of this increase, the way some of the stores that have been in business for a longer period of time are able to do."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Dajiah Blackshear, Natural hair stylist:
"I’m experiencing an influx in prices and products that I need, so there is no way around it and you know, just small things like a bottle of glue going from $8 to now $14.99 which is almost double the price — that goes into my bottom line so when it comes to pricing my services and you know, bringing that to a client, I’m having to cover those costs on the back end and for a client, that can kind of be upsetting."

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Dajiah Blackshear, Natural hair stylist:
"Clients pay attention to where they’re spending their money, you know, so when they’re sitting in the chair and they’re like, ‘OK, my sew-in used to be $200, why is it $250 now?’ You know, and I have to explain to them, you know, what’s going on and have that conversation. Some people are OK with it, but for a lot of people, they’re like, ‘OK, I won’t be seeing you for a little while. I’m gonna go have to find somebody that fits within my budget."

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Curtis Morgan, Cosmetologist, wig-maker:
"For women of color, their hair is a reflection of their everyday life, so they want to be as professional and polished as possible, being that they work very significant jobs — nurses, lawyers, doctors, teachers… so them having a professional look is important."

18. SOUNDBITE (English) Curtis Morgan, Cosmetologist, wig-maker:
"Many clients have had the conversation with us the same way we’re having the conversation with them about price raises — they’re having a conversation about how their life is in a new financial space and they may(be) cannot make a regular consistent appointment because they have to consider is this a necessity as much as it used to be?"
