Bananas are one of Panama’s five most important exports — and it is precisely in this sector that disputes and redundancies are now occurring. The Panamanian subsidiary of the American banana company Chiquita has announced its intention to make all of its remaining employees in the Central American country redundant.
During protests against pension reforms in May, Chiquita laid off thousands of harvest workers in Panama. A court ruled the strike illegal. With work still at a standstill, the US banana giant now intends to lay off its remaining workers.
