President Trump’s crackdown on immigration has sparked protests in Los Angeles, where at least 44 people have been arrested in a series of raids.
Protesters attempted to stop vehicles from carrying people away. Crowds gathered outside the city’s federal detention facility, chanting "set them free, let them stay." The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, or ICE, says it has carried out an average of 1,600 arrests a day under the Trump administration.
The clashes came on the same day that the man who became a symbol for opponents of Trump’s immigration policy arrived back in the US. Kilmar Abrego Garcia was mistakenly deported from Maryland to El Salvador. Government officials had defied court orders to help bring him back – until Friday. DW’s Benjamin Alvarez Gruber reports from Washington DC.
