2. SOUNDBITE (English) Archbishop Gregory Aymond, Archdiocese of New Orleans:
"A fleet blessing is when we ask God’s blessings and protection upon our first responders. A lot of times we take for granted that as we evacuate for a hurricane or for other storms that we’re out of harm, but our first responders stay. They cannot evacuate. Their families can, but they cannot and they stay to give us protection. And so today we get together to bless them to ask God’s protection upon them as they put their lives in danger and we also ask God’s blessings upon their families and upon all the vehicles that they use in order to protect us."

"As we know, in New Orleans, the hurricane season is a time of fear. It’s a time of trepidation as we see these forming in the Gulf and beyond and we realize that the damage that it can do, how much it it really does threaten us. And so these people are on the front lines. They are rescuing people that need to be rescued."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Superintendent Roman Nelson, New Orleans Fire Department:
"Today we bless this fleet not just as machinery but as lifelines. Every engine, every truck, every boat represents a promise that when the call comes, we will answer. We ask for protection for the people who serve in these vehicles and for the community they serve. May this season bring peace but may we be ready together for whatever may come."

STORYLINE:
New Orleans first responders were honored Tuesday with a "Blessing of the Fleet" to mark the start of the 2025 hurricane season.
Instead of a traditional fleet blessing, which typically blesses fishing boats before the start of fishing season, Archbishop Gregory Aymond sprinkled holy water on dozens of emergency vehicles which will eventually take part in rescue efforts.
"A lot of times we take for granted that as we evacuate for a hurricane or for other storms, that we’re out of harm but our first responders stay", says Archbishop Aymond.
Last month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration unveiled their hurricane season outlook forecasted a 60% chance the season will above normal.
The prediction calls for 13 to 19 named storms with six to 10 becoming hurricanes and three-to-five reaching major status with winds of more than 110 mph.
