STORYLINE:
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she talked to President Donald Trump in the last 24 hours about the two men convicted of plotting to kidnap her in 2020 after the president mused last week that he would look into pardoning them.
Whitmer is a Democrat and potential 2028 presidential candidate. She declined to elaborate on details of the discussion, but said she connected with the Republican president directly on the subject and "made my thoughts known.”
“It’s important that in any case that has resulted in a jury convicting people, the impact on the victim is really important," she said Tuesday at a ribbon-cutting event in Detroit. "As a former prosecutor, as the target of this particular plot, I wanted to make sure that the president who’s going to make a decision has all the information necessary toward making the right decision.”
Last week, Trump said he was considering a pardon for the men.
Shortly thereafter, Whitmer said Trump would be going back on his word if he pardoned the two men, saying she had a conversation with the president about a month ago regarding the topic, and he said he would drop it.
